I do it for the mic tape residue that refuses to be scrubbed from my face. I do it for the calluses on my feet from too many hours spent in character shoes. I do it for the blinding spotlights, for that note I can’t hit, for the impossibility of finding a comfortable sleeping position in a seat in the audience. I do it because I love it but also because I hate it, and I hate that I love it and I hate that I could never, ever give it up. It’s all-encompassing, more than just a hobby or a passion or a career but a state of being. The Performer. The Entertainer. The Ladies-And-Gentlemen-I-Give-You-The-One-And-Only-Insert-Name-Here. I do it because I feel so strongly that it’s what I should be doing, and because when I’m doing it is when I feel the most alive.
I am theatre. What are you?
